Sharks Defeat Johnson State at Elms Tip-Off, 74-52

Jessica Thomas (East Sandwich, Mass.), Julianna Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) and Stephanie Fox (West Springfield, Mass.) all scored 16 points en route to Simmons? 74-52 victory over Johnson State in the Elms Tip-Off Consolation game, after falling to MCLA (71-65) in the tournament?s first round Friday evening.

Simmons Basketball suffered their second straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference loss at the hand of Albertus Magnus College, 57-52, Tuesday night at the Holmes Sports Center. Senior guard Julianna Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) scored a game-high 19 points, but it wasn?t enough to help the Sharks to push past the Falcons for the win. With the defeat, Simmons falls to 13-8 overall, 5-4 GNAC, while Albertus improves to 10-12, 6-3 GNAC.

Simmons and Johnson were tied at five in the early going before two free throws from freshman Liz O'Connor (Milton, Mass.) capped off a 10 point run to put Simmons ahead. The Sharks did not look back as they extended their lead to 20 with seven minutes left to go in the first half. Fox led all scorers in the first half with 11 points. Simmons dominated the second half, as Johnson State never lowered the deficit beyond 16 points. As the game concluded, Simmons sailed to a victory, winning by a margin of 22 points.

Simmons had a three-pronged offensive attack as Thomas, Eagles and Fox each scored 16 points for the Sharks. As the Sharks held Johnson State to just 28 percent from the field.

Johnson State's offensive bright spots came from Maria Gleason (Enosburg, V.T.) as she dropped 12 points, and Lauren Lepage (Rumford, Maine), who added 10 points for the Badgers.

Simmons will next play Wheelock College on Tuesday, November 24 at 6:00pm in the Sharks' 2009 home opener.
