Sharks Take Bite out of Saint Joseph's Maine, 64-51

Simmons College picked up a hard-fought win on the road last night over conference foe Saint Joseph College of Connecticut, 63-56, in overtime. With the win, the Sharks improved to 14-6 on the year and 5-2 in GNAC play, while the Blue Jays fall to 3-17 on the year and 1-7 GNAC.

Junior forward Stephanie Fox (West Springfield, Mass.) scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and four steals, and shot 10-11 in free throws for the Sharks. Senior Sarah Clayton (Falmouth, Mass.) flexed her offensive muscle behind Fox with 15 critical points, four assists and six boards, while junior Julianna Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) netted 13 points in the win. The Sharks made a big defensive effort, holding the Monks to 30% shooting from the floor, and forcing 20 turnovers to Simmons' 10.

Simmons began the game on a 10-2 push, with Fox accounting for five of the points after grabbing a loose ball from SJC. Later, a foul shot made by Sharks' senior guard Lauren Kreckie (Braintree, Mass.) capped an 11-2 Simmons surge and put the Sharks ahead 24-10. Simmons continued to hold at least an 11-point lead for the remainder of the half and led 37-18 going into intermission.

A pair of free throws from Fox 4:21 into the second period pushed the Simmons lead to a game-high 21 points, 43-22. Simmons managed to push their lead to 16 with a 6-0 burst in the subsequent four minutes, as a pair of Fox jumpers sandwiched a bucket from Clayton to lift the Sharks to a 51-35 lead with 8:31 to play.

SJC cut the lead back down to eight points, 51-43, as Geel scored back-to-back baskets with 6:09 to play. The eight-point difference was as close as the Monks would get to the Sharks. Simmons made six straight shots from the line in the closing minutes to secure the 64-51 victory.

SJC freshman Ashley Geel (St. George, Maine) had nine points, three boards, three assists and two blocks. Fournier added seven points and four assists.

Simmons will host GNAC foe Norwich University on Saturday, February 21 at 1:00pm.
