Simmons Tops St. Joseph’s (NY), 83-75

Simmons Basketball opened the season at home in style with a non-conference win over the College of Saint Elizabeth, 55-49. The Sharks advance to a 1-0 overall record, while the Eagles fall to 0-1.

Senior guard Sarah Clayton (Falmouth, Mass.) and junior captain Julianna Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) each scored 18 points, as Simmons defeated St. Joseph?s College (NY) in the consolation round of the Hunter College Women?s Basketball Alumni Tip-Off Tournament at the Hunter College Sportsplex on Saturday afternoon.

Simmons got off to a quick start with a 14-6 lead in the first few minutes of the game.  The remainder of the first half consisted of back and forth scoring, as Simmons closed out the half with a three point lead, 42-39.  At halftime, junior Stephanie Fox (West Springfield, Mass.) led the Sharks with 10 points, while also adding five blocks and three assists.

In the second half, Simmons led by as much as 16 (61-45) with just 13:06 remaining following a three-point field goal by Clayton.  But the Golden Eagles stormed back and went on a 20-6, bringing the score to 67-65, Simmons.  With the two point lead Simmons' Julianna Eagles scored seven points with four minutes remaining in regulation to seal the 83-75 win. 

Dana Carney led St. Joseph's with 22 points and seven rebounds, Trish McMahon added 17 points.

Stephanie Fox was named to the Hunter College Women's Basketball Alumni Tip-Off All-Tournament Team

"Stephanie played well this weekend, despite being in obvious pain, however it was clear to the all tournament committee that she was one of the top players in the tournament, said Head Coach Tony Price.  "I think a healthy Steph Fox would have done even more."

The Sharks (3-1) return to action on Tuesday, December 4 when they travel to Dartmouth, Mass. to play UMass-Dartmouth at 7:00 p.m.
