Simmons Falls to Emmanuel in Conference Opener, 61-56

Simmons Basketball took the win against Gordon College at home on Tuesday night, advancing their overall record to 2-0. The Fighting Scots fall to 0-2.

Junior forward Stephanie Fox (West Springfield, Mass.) totaled 19 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks in Simmons loss to cross-street rival Emmanuel, 61-56, on Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. With the loss, the Sharks fall to 8-5, GNAC 0-1, while the Saints improve to 8-6, GNAC 2-0.

Sophomores Kristen LeBel (Tolland, Conn.) and Casey Shevlin (Medford, N.Y.) went 7-8 from the free throw line during the last minute of regulation to seal the win for Emmanuel. 

Emmanuel went into the break with a slim three point lead (34-31) after the two teams played a back-and-forth first half, which featured six lead changes and seven ties. At the end the first half Emmanuel's junior captain Iman Davis (Toms River, N.J.) led all scorers with 14 points.

The Saints came out in the second on a 8-0 tear, extending their lead to 38-35 with 11:37 remaining.  The Sharks then went on a 6-0 run to bring the game within five.  Emmanuel responded with a 10-6 run, making the score 52-39 with less than six minutes left in regulation. 

Simmons got within six points of the Saints five times including the final two minutes of the game, but Emmanuel held on in a close game to take the 61-56 victory and their second conference win of the season. 

Simmons' junior guard Julianna Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) finished with 14 points and six assists, while senior Lauren Kreckie (Braintree, Mass.) was credited with 11 point and 10 rebounds. 

Davis finished with a game-high 22 points, seven rebounds and six steals, while LeBel tallied 17 points and six rebounds for Emmanuel.

The Sharks return to action on Monday, January 19 to face conference foe Suffolk University at 2:00pm at Suffolk.  Emmanuel returns to action on Monday, January 19, traveling to Standish, Maine for a 1:00pm contest against St. Joseph's College (Maine).
