Simmons Falls to Norwich in Home Finale, 67-60

Junior guard Julianna Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) scored a team-high 19 points to lead Simmons to a 70-63 overtime decision over NEWMAC foe Smith College on Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. With the win, the Sharks improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 5-3.

Senior Kayleigh Shappy and juniors Ally Daniels and Erica Rate combined for 34 points to lead Norwich past Simmons, 67-60 in its last regular season game Saturday at the Holmes Sports Center. The Sharks end the regular season 17-8, GNAC 8-4, while the Cadets finish 17-6, GNAC 10-2.

Senior Lauren Kreckie (Braintree, Mass.) led the Sharks with a double-double scoring 16 points with 12 rebounds.  Junior Stephanie Fox (West Springfield, Mass.) also recorded a double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.  Senior Sarah Clayton (Falmouth, Mass.) added nine points and three assists. 

Norwich jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game.  Freshman forward Tara Stevenson came off the bench to lead the Cadets in the first half with seven points, shooting 3-7 from the field, while also grabbing five rebounds.  Norwich ended the half with an eight point advantage (30-22).  

Norwich went on a 10-3 run at the start of the second half to extend their lead to 15 (40-25). Simmons outscored Norwich in the next nine minutes 22-8 to cut the lead to one (48-47) with just under six minutes left in the second half. In the streak sophomore guard Morgan Johnson (Waterbury, Conn.) came off the bench and scored seven points, Fox also scored seven points.  The Cadets held on to the lead to win the game by seven, 67-60, going 12-14 from the free-throw line in the last four minutes of regulation. 

The sixth seeded Sharks will travel to Northfield, Vt. for a re-match with third seeded Norwich in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals, Tuesday, February 24 - time (TBA).
