Simmons College "Think Pink" night a success

The Simmons College women's basketball team closed out its home schedule Tuesday night, by taking part in the "Think Pink" night. Women's basketball programs across the country, at all divisions, including every team in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference celebrated a Think Pink night, to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Research.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association in conjunction with the Kay Yow Fund, was the architect behind the project, and featured more than 1000 participants nationwide. At Simmons fans filled the William J. Holmes Sports and Fitness center dressed in pink to support the Sharks and the cause. The Sharks themselves were given a pink t-shirt to wear during warm-ups and on the bench.

A donation box was set up for fans to donate money to the Kay Yow fund, which is named for the legendary NC State women's basketball coach who has survived breast cancer, and helps support research. Fans who donated received a pink ribbon to pin to their shorts to show their support. The event raised nearly $300 at Simmons alone, and the GNAC is hoping to cross the $2000 threshold by the end of the weekend when all the schools have had their events.

"I'm glad that Simmons was able to do a small part to raise awareness of cancer by hosting a Think Pink game," said Simmons head coach Tony Price. "This is a great cause; it's particularly meaningful, since we are an all women's institution. It was a great opportunity to show support, caring and love, but it was also a chance to educate people and to point out that there's hope in beating and curing cancer."
