Volleyball Sweeps Saturday Afternoon Tri-Match against Anna Maria, Colby-Sawyer on Senior Day

BOSTON – Simmons volleyball (14-9, 8-2 GNAC) snapped a two-match skid sweeping Saturday afternoon's tri-match defeating Anna Maria (3-17, 0-10 GNAC) and Colby-Sawyer (9-15, 5-6 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

 

MATCH 1: Simmons 3, Anna Maria 0

In their first match of the day, the Sharks offense came out on fire, hitting .514 as a team with 44 kills on 72 attempts. Junior outside hitter Claire Conners set the tone of the match registering seven kills on nine attempts to guide Simmons to a first set victory, 25-17.

The Sharks lone senior, Sydney Iannantuono came alive in the second set and atoned for a rough first set. The Connecticut native notched six kills on eight attempts with one error, while Conners was almost flawless from the floor tallying six kills on eight attempts to help the Sharks take the 2-0 match advantage.  

Iannantuono continued her offensive firepower in the third set. A perfect seven for seven, she sealed the 3-0 win for Simmons take the set, 25-11. 

 

MATCH 2: Simmons 3, Anna Maria 1

Simmons started their second match of the day dropping the first set to Colby-Sawyer, 26-24 to find themselves in an 0-1 hole. But they atoned for the loss and evened up the match a 1-1 with a convincing 25-8 win, hitting an outstanding .353 as a team.

The Sharks did not take their foot of the accelerator and kept the pressure on the Chargers. Behind an eight-kill performance from Iannantuono, Simmons pulled ahead 2-1 with a win in game three, before slamming the door shut in the fourth set.

Conners was flawless from the floor in the fourth set with six kills on 11 attempts, which helped increase the Sharks team attack percentage of .314. Iannantuno followed up with four kills on 11 attempts and finished with 16 kills on 38 attempts and just one attack error.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior outside hitter Sydney Iannantuono posted a staggering .565 attack percentage on the day with 30 kills on 46 attempts and just four kills.
  • Sophomore Meghan Doxsee registered a career single-game high six block assists against Colby-Sawyer.
  • Junior outside hitter Claire Conners recorded a .414 attack percentage with 35 kills on 70 attempts with just six errors on the afternoon
