Coombs Paces Volleyball in 3-0 Loss at Babson

BOSTON, Mass. -- First year outside hitter Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) put down a career-high 12 kills to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team in a 3-2 (20-25, 24-26, 25-17, 25-13, 15-13) loss to host University of Massachusetts Boston this evening at the Clark Athletic Center in Boston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 5-8 on the season, while the Beacons improve to 9-4.

The Sharks fall to 8-11 on the season, while the Beavers win their fifth straight match to improve to 16-5.

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- First year Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) led all players with eight kills to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) loss to host Babson College this evening at Staake Gymnasium in Babson Park, Mass. The Sharks fall to 8-11 on the season, while the Beavers win their fifth straight match to improve to 16-5.

Simmons committed 17 service errors, while Babson totaled 10 total blocks for the match.

Coombs added seven digs, a pair of aces and a block assist to give her a match-high 10.5 points for the Sharks. First year middle blocker Amanda Fortune (Round Rock, Texas) chipped in with five kills on a .333 hitting percentage and added an ace and a block assist, while classmate Krissy Lloyd (Tampa, Fla.) contributed with five kills. Junior setter Kenna McCarthy (Shelter Island, N.Y.) set for 12 assists and sophomore libero Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) picked up a match-best 16 digs to go with a kill.

Senior outside hitter Shannon Roseen (Malden, Mass.) led the Beavers attack with six kills to fuel a .333 hitting mark in addition to five digs and an ace, while sophomore outside hitter Allie Puccio (New Hartford, N.Y.) swung for five kills with a .500 hitting clip and added six digs. Junior setter Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) set for 13 assists, picked up five digs and recorded a block assist. Senior defensive specialist Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) scooped up 16 digs and fired a pair of aces.

The Green and White never trailed in the opening set and put away eight kills while taking advantage of seven Simmons service errors to build a 1-0 advantage. Leading 13-11 in game two, Carosotto and Roseen combined for three straight kills to key an 8-2 run that extended the margin to as many as eight on another kill by sophomore Avery Tronson (Woodland Hills, Calif.). 

Roseen put away a pair of kills and junior Emily Woodward (Deerfield, Mass.) and first-year Samantha Hardan (Woodway, Wash.) each contributed an ace to help Babson get out to a 12-5 edge in the third set. The Sharks got as close as 18-13 thanks to a block by sophomore Megan Purser (Miami, Fla.) and Lloyd, but the Green and White responded with kills from Lechner, Tronson and sophomore Rachel Williams (Chicago, Ill.) over its final seven points to put the match away.

Simmons returns to action on Saturday, October 13 when it hosts Norwich University and University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at Moore Gymnasium beginning at 2:00 p.m., while Babson hosts Springfield College on October 16 at 7:00 p.m.
