Lacrosse Moves to 6-0 In Conference Following a 14-7 Win over Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Simmons lacrosse (8-2, 6-0 GNAC) returned from their long Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road trip remaining perfect in conference play following a 14-7 win over Norwich University (3-6, 2-4 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon.

For the first time since early March, the Sharks began the game down by a goal. Norwich's Maddie Etherton scored on a free position shot to put the Cadets in front, 1-0, the lead lasted for less than three minutes. Junior Julia Chausse connected with sophomore Frida Turriza to score the equalizer and ignite a 6-0 run.

Trailing by five entering the second quarter, the Cadets' Michaila Furchak broke up the string of six straight Shark goals, scoring just over a minute into the period. Junior Cameron Richards expanded the lead back to five, burying a free position goal, but the Cadets mounted a comeback with back-to-back goals within a minute to pull within three. It was a close as Norwich got. Graduate senior Abby Stoller registered her third goal of the game with two minutes to play in the half to go into the intermission with an 8-4 advantage.

The Sharks went into attack mode at the start of the second half. Stoller rattled off three straight goals in the first 10 minutes to widen the lead to seven, 11-4. Just before the end of the third quarter, the Cadets took advantage of player up opportunity and scored on a free position, but Turriza ended the period with her third goal of the game to take a 12-5 lead into the final quarter.

While the two teams each scored a pair of goals in the fourth period, the Sharks had the game well in their control. Senior goalkeeper Katie Castle earned her fifth victory of the season recording nine saves over the entire 60 minute game.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore Layla Drinkwater has scored in each of the last four straight games, scoring the Sharks' 13th goal in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.
  • Graduate senior Abby Stoller registred seven goals for the second time this season to lead all scorer, while also tallying six draw controls.
  • Senior Riley Wasiuk tied her career single-game best, forcing four turnovers by the Cadets.
  • Sophomore Frida Turriza recorded the equalizer five minutes into the contest, while also notched three caused turnovers.
  • Senior Sidney pilot and junior Maggie Calender also notched three caused turnovers for the Sharks. 

GAME NOTES

  • Simmons improves to 10-7 against Norwich, all-time, and extends their streak to seven wins over the Cadets.
  • The Cadets became the first team to score first against the Sharks since Grove City on March 8.
