BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons lacrosse (4-2) dropped a non-conference decision to Salve Regina University (3-3) on Monday evening.

The Sharks came out strong in the opening minutes. Junior Julia Chausse connected with graduate senior Abby Stoller nearly four minutes into the game to give Simmons the quick 1-0 advantage. However, the Seahawks rattled off four straight goals to pull ahead, 4-1.

Stoller cut the deficit in half finding the back of the goal on free position shot with under five minutes remaining in the period. Then, just before time expired on the first quarter, junior Cameron Richards pulled the Sharks to within one, burying a free position shot to make it a 4-3 game.

The winds of momentum appeared to switch directions as the two teams began the second quarter. Chausse connected with sophomore Frida Turriza to knot up the game at four, before helping herself to goal 50 seconds later re-gain the lead for the Sharks. But that was the last time Simmons saw itself with the lead.

Salve Regina answered with back-to-back goals by Kelly Ventura to take a 6-5 lead, but Simmons responded. Chausse found sophomore Maddie Desimio-Maloney close by the net to tie up the contest once again. The Seahawks managed to escape the first with lead, scoring with three minutes remaining in half to take a 7-6 advantage into the intermission.

Returning to the field at the start of the second half, the Seahawks pulled ahead by two with an early goal. Three minutes later, Stoller found Turriza in front of the goal to bring the Sharks back within one, before tying the contest for the fifth time with her third goal of the game.

The Seahawks ignited a 4-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. But the Sharks were not backing down. With just under three minutes to play in the third quarter Chausse flipped the ball to senior Sammi Hogan, who buried the Sharks ninth goal into the back the net. After the Seahawks scored a minute later to go back ahead by four goals, Desimio-Maloney connected with Stoller for her fourth goal to pull Simmons to within three.

Salve Regina opened the final quarter of the paly with a pair of free position goals to give themselves their largest lead of the game, 15-10. The Sharks answered with junior Marita Nothacker capping off a 3-0 run cut the deficit to two. But it was as close as they would get.
