Lacrosse Falls to Nazareth, 17-2

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. -- The Simmons University women's lacrosse team was defeated by Nazareth College, 17-2, today at Ann Dever Park in Englewood, Fla. The Sharks three-match win streak comes to an end as they fall to 3-1 on the season, while the Golden Flyers improve to 2-3.

Nazareth owned a 30-16 shot advantage, while converting on six of nine free position opportunities.

First years Samantha Hogan (Westborough, Mass.) and Lauren Whitman (Mansfield, Mass.) each scored a goal for Simmons. Hogan also added a ground ball, while Whitman notched a ground ball, a draw control and a caused turnover. First year midfielder Sidney Pilot (Pomfret, Vt.) contributed with an assist, a game-high five draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Senior midfielder Addilyn Geitner (Bloomfield, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Emma Robinson (Central Square, N.Y.) each scored three goals to lead the Nazareth, while first year attacker Emma States (Phoenix, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Lauren Caldwell (Liverpool, N.Y.) netted two markers apiece. 

The Golden Flyers scored the first 10 goals of the contest and owned an 11-1 lead heading into the intermission.

Both Geitner and Robinson scored all of their goals in the first half for Nazareth. 

Caldwell scored the first goal for the Golden Flyers and finished with two goals and an assist. Geitner added the first of her three goals two minutes later and junior Callahan Lyon (Tully, N.Y.) scored with an assist from senior Lily Aldrich (Tully, N.Y.) before States scored to give Nazareth a 4-0 lead in the first nine minutes of action.

Geitner, States and Robinson added goals over the next 10 minutes to push the lead to 7-0. Geitner scored her third goal at 7:52 and Robinson and Caldwell added goals over the next two minutes to give the Golden Flyers a 10-0 lead for the running clock.

The Sharks got on the board with 3:06 left to play in the opening half when Pilot found Hogan for her second goal of the season to cut the deficit to 10-1. Robinson scored on a helper from sophomore midfielder Phoebe Barnett (Watertown, N.Y.) with 50 seconds left in the period.

 

Barnett, junior Jordan Knapp (Canandaigua, N.Y.), first year Kate Metzler (Collegeville, Pa.), and first year Annie Rubel (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored for Nazareth in the first seven minutes of the second half to push the lead to 15-1. The goals for Metzler and Rubel were the first goals of their college careers.

Whitman scored with exactly 18 minutes left in the match to pull Simmons to within, 15-2, before first years Maren Wallace (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Maya Cox (West Henrietta, N.Y.) each scored their first respective college goals to cap the scoring for the Golden Flyers.

Sophomore goalie Katie Lawrence (Tully, N.Y.) played the first half and made three saves for Nazareth, while sophomore Emma Prosak (Jamesville, N.Y.) played the final 30 minutes and was credited with five stops. Sophomore Nicole Elliott (Wayne, N.J.) stopped three of 14 shots in the first half for Simmons, before first year Katie Castle (North Waterboro, Maine) made her collegiate debut in net with four saves in 10 shots on net.

The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, March 11 when they take on Wentworth Institute of Technology at the Balmoral Resort in Haines City, Fla. at 10:00 a.m., while the Golden Flyers will face Illinois Wesleyan on the same day at 7:30 p.m. in Englewood.
