BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - Sophomore midfielder Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) tallied a career-high six points, including a personal-best four goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team to a 16-11 victory over host Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium in Buzzards Bay, Mass. The Sharks win their second straight to improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Buccaneers fall to 0-3.

Simmons controlled the ball off the draw for most of the afternoon, owning a 21-7 draw control advantage.

Giarrusso added two assists, won a career-high nine draw controls, added a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover for the Sharks. Classmate Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) also recorded six points for the match, including a career-high five assists to go with a goal and a game-high five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore defender Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) contributed with a personal-high four points on two goals and two assists in addition to four draw controls and a pair of ground balls, while sophomore attacker Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) netted three goals and assisted on another. Sophomore Kenzie Rogers (Bourne, Mass.) picked up the victory in net for Simmons, stopping six of 16 shots in 47:10 of action, while junior Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) turned away two of three shots in 12:50 of play.

Junior attacker Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) netted a season-high seven goals in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a pair of tallies and an assist from sophomore defender Erica Overstreet (Bridgewater, Mass.) in addition to a draw control and a ground ball. Senior attacker Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) and first year attacker Cammi Balentine (Haverhill, Mass.) also added markers for the Buccaneers, who received a pair of assists from senior attacker Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.). Seggelin also came up with five draw controls and four ground balls, while Balentine caused a turnover and picked up a pair of ground balls.

Hunt knotted the score at 9-9 for Massachusetts Maritime on a feed from senior attacker Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) with 22:46 left in the second half. The Sharks responded with four straight goals, including a tally from Maiewski on a helper from Bragg to give them a 13-9 cushion with 13:58 to go in the game. Seggelin scored at the 13:13 mark for the home team, but Simmons closed out the contest with three of the last four goals to come away with the victory.

Hunt sandwiched a pair of goals around a Simmons score from first year attacker Kate Bowers (Belchertown, Mass.) to give the Buccaneers an early 2-1 lead. Maiewski, junior attacker Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Giarrusso followed with a goal each to give the Sharks a 4-2 margin with 22:10 remaining in the opening half. The Sharks later increased their lead to 8-5 when junior attacker Kiera Kirkaldy (Middlebury, Vt.) found the back of the net with 3:30 showing on the first half clock. Balentine and Hunt scored in the final 66 seconds of the half, including Hunt's score as time expired, to pull Massachusetts Maritime to within 8-7 heading into the intermission.

Simmons returns to action on Tuesday, March 21 when it hosts Curry College at Daly Field for a 7:00 p.m. match, while the Buccaneers head to New London, Conn. on March 29 for a 7:00 p.m. contest with United States Coast Guard Academy.
