Sharks Set for GNAC Lacrosse Tournament

Simmons Lacrosse will open the 2011 GNAC Tournament when they host a quarterfinal matchup against Mount Ida on Wednesday, April 27 at 7:00pm after a competitive 2011 women?s lacrosse season.

Simmons College Lacrosse has been selected to the 2011 ECAC Division III New England Women?s Lacrosse Championship, the ECAC announced on Monday. This will be the program?s first appearance in the postseason. The tournament is a four-team field with the semifinal games on Wednesday and the championship game on Saturday. 

Simmons College Lacrosse wrapped up the 2011 season this month after the Sharks earned their first-ever post-season bid to the ECAC tournament. Despite facing elimination after the semifinal round, the team?s performance capped a strong spring in which Simmons went 5-3 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. In the preseason coaches? poll, Simmons was ranked 6th in the GNAC, and finished the regular season in 4th place with a record of 7-4. The 2011 season was the strongest for the team in just its third year as a varsity program, marking the first time Simmons Lacrosse qualified for the GNAC Tournament, as well as ECACs.

The reigning 2010 GNAC tournament champions, Norwich University (8-0, 8-2) clinched first place in the conference. Lasell College earned a second place finish with their only loss of the GNAC season coming to the Cadets (7-1, 10-5). Emerson (6-2, 6-8) earned a third place finish and Simmons (5-3, 7-4) took fourth place. Rounding out the final two playoff spots are #5 Mount Ida and #6 Rivier College.

The GNAC tournament will be a six-team tournament bracket with the Quarter Finals beginning Wednesday April 27 at #3 Emerson and #4 Simmons. The Semi-Finals will occur on Friday, April 29th at the #1 Norwich and #2 Lasell. The Championship game will be Sunday, May 1 at the highest remaining seed.
