Brasa Leads Sharks to First Win

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons first year Liz Brasa (East Hartford, Conn.) scored 20 points to lead the Sharks to their first win of the year over the visiting Wheelock College Wildcats, 70-52 Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. 

NORTHFIELD, Vt.?Eleven different players scored to lead the Norwich University women?s basketball team to a 58-34 win against the Sharks of Simmons College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) actionon Thursday evening.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Basketball dropped a 54-38 decision to the visiting Mount Holyoke College Lyons in the Sharks first game in 2014 Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Sports Center. With the win, the Lyons move to 4-6 overall while the Sharks fall to 1-8. Kate Karraker led all players with 22 points.

Brasa went 7-13 from the floor, 6-6 from the line and posted nine rebounds to pace the Sharks.

 

The Sharks (1-4) took an early 7-0 lead in the first half as Brasa buried the team's first five points. Senior Leah Davis (Cranston, R.I.) add two of her 12 points from the line before Shannon Garvey put the Wildcats on the board. Emily Doyle hit two jumpers in a row and Jaime Grzych drained a shot from behind the arc to tie the game at 11. But the Sharks offense dominated as Jen Janiak (Chelmsford, Mass.) hit a three and Ashley McAdams (Freeport, N.Y.) came off the bench for four points to give the Sharks a 28-14 lead.

 

Wheelock's Michelle Woods closed the gap to 11 with two shots from the paint but Brasa nailed two shots in the final minute to give the Sharks a 35-19 lead into halftime.

 

The Sharks came out strong in the second half as Janiak sunk a three and Davis hit two jumpers on their way to eight points apiece. Woods had a standout second half, scoring 18 points, while Grzych added nine for the Wildcats. But the Sharks never gave up their lead in the second, securing the team's first win of the season, 70-52.

 

Simmons returns to action on Dec. 4 at MIT at 7:00 PM, while the Wildcats (1-3) host Mount Ida College on Nov. 26 at 7:30 PM.
