Softball Suffers A Pair of Tough Losses to Alfred, Husson

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Simmons softball (3-4) fell back to under .500 on the season following a pair of losses against Alfred University (3-4) and regional foe Husson University (6-4) on Thursday afternoon.

GAME 2: Husson 7, Simmons 1

Senior right fielder Jordyn Rubin launched her first homerun of the season in Simmons second game of the day against Husson University. Over the course of her career, Rubin has hit six homeruns, but today was the first time she hit a homerun against an institution from her home state of Maine. 

In the circle, sophomore right-hander Piper Kinney was making her fourth start of the season. Despite taking the loss against the Eagles, the central Massachusetts native retired eight opposing batters by way of the strikeout, while walking just one.

GAME 1: Alfred 8, Simmons 0 – 5 innings

In their first game of the day, the Saxons jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. They tacked on additional two runs in the third to extend their lead to five.

Alfred starting right-hander Megan Bennett was able to keep the Sharks at bay for the first three innings, taking a no-hitter into the fourth. Sophomore Ally Hyde broke up the no-hit bid lining an opposite field single into left field, but the Sharks were unable to bring her around.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior right-hander Jordyn Rubin recorded her first homerun of the season against Husson. It was the first homerun for the Maine native against a team from her home state.
  • Sophomore Piper Kinney made her fourth start of the season against Husson and recorded eight strikeouts for the second time on the young season.
  • Sophomore Ally Hyde went 2-for-4 with a walk against Husson and Alfred on the day.
