Softball's Tourney Run Comes to A Close, Falling to Saint Joseph's College of Maine

BOSTON – The 2022 season came to close for the Simmons softball (26-13-1) team following a 5-3 loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine (20-17) early Saturday evening. 

Simmons jumped on the board first to take a 1-0 lead in the first on an unearned run and then doubled their lead in the third on an RBI single to left by graduate senior Christie Bott to account for the early 2-0 advantage. 

Trailing 2-0, the Monks batted around in the fourth and plated four runs on three hits to take control of the action at 4-2. The Monks added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single take a three-run, 5-2 lead.

The Sharks battled until the end as sophomore Jordyn Rubin made it a two-run game with an RBI double to left center to cut the lead to 5-3. With the tying run at the plate, the Monks were able to escape the jam preserve their second win of the day and advance to GNAC Championship Sunday.

Senior right-hander Maddie Castigliego tossed her 34th complete game of the year, allowing just two earned runs, while striking out four Monks.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior shortstop Allie Mulhern ended the season with a 26-game hitting streak, going two-for-four with two runs scored, while wreaking havoc on the base paths, swiping four bases. 
  • Senior right-hander Maddie Castigliego suffered the loss, allowing five runs only two earned, while striking out four opposing batters.
  • Senior Christie Bott went one-for-four with an RBI, while sophomore Jordyn Rubin went one-for-three with an RBI from the middle of the order.
