Gomes Named GNAC Softball Pitcher of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons University?s Tori Gomes (Taunton, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of February 25 to March 3, it was announced today by the league. 

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons University's Tori Gomes (Taunton, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of February 25 to March 3, it was announced today by the league. 

Gomes becomes the first pitcher to earn the honor for Simmons since Lauren Backhaus (2012-15) was tabbed for the week of March 9-15, 2015.

The senior earned a victory in her only start of the week and held opposing hitters to a .200 (4-20) batting mark. The Coyle & Cassidy High School product allowed three runs on four hits and two walks to earn a complete-game victory in a 12-3 win over Randolph College on March 3 at Chain of Lakes Park in Titusville, Fla. as part of the Sunkissed Games. The starting assignment was her first appearance of the season for the Sharks. 

Gomes has made 40 appearances from the pitching circle during her four-year tenure at Simmons, including 34 starts. The East Asian Studies major owns a 10-19 career record, while striking out 64 batters in 171 2/3 innings pitched to go with a 4.53 career earned run average. She led the Sharks in innings pitched, strikeouts and complete games in each of her first two campaigns at Simmons. 

The Sharks are currently 1-1 on the season and will be in action again when they take on St. John Fisher College today at 4:30 p.m. at the Randy Larson Complex in Plant City, Fla.
