Field Hockey Earns 11th Shutout, Blanking Regis, 4-0; Gonyea Eclipses Program Single-Season Goal Mark

WESTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (13-2 , 8-2 GNAC) picked up its 11th shutout of the season with a 4-0 road victory over Regis College (3-12, 3-7 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon. In the process, sophomore Sydney Gonyea surpassed Julie Saltamartini's 2017 single-season goal record, registering two goals in the win to give her 22 on the season.  

After a scoreless first quarter, Gonyea put the Sharks on the scoreboard four minutes into the second period. Coming off back-to-back penalty corners, she collected her own rebound and knifing the ball into the back of the cage to put the Sharks on the board, 1-0, which they took into the halftime intermission. 

It remained a one goal game until just before the end of the third quarer. Sophomore forward Anna Tedeschi connected with senior Haley Dover to add an insurance goal and give Simmons the two-goal lead. Five minutes later, first-year Zoe Schmaling got into scoring action and recorded her fifth goal of the season and give Simmons the 3-0 advantage.  

Before the final horn blew, Tedeschi tallied another assist on the day, finding Gonyea in front of the goal for her second jumping over Saltamartini as the program's single-season goal leader.  

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Arenberg improved to 7-0 on the season and earned her conference-leading fifth shutout on the year.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore forward Sydney Gonyea registered a pair of goals – including the game-winner – to surpass Julie Saltamartini's single-season mark of 21 set in 2017.
  • Fellow sophomore Anna Tedeschi added another two assists to give her two pointso n the day and has recorded at least one point in her last eight games.
  • Senior goalkeeper Sarah Arenberg picked up her fifth shutout of the season and currently leads the GNAC in the category.

GAME NOTES

  • Simmons improves to 14-0 all-time against Regis.
  • The Sharks outshot the Pride, 24-5.

Simmons will close out the regular season on Wednesday, October 26 when they travel to Dean College for a 3 p.m. tilt with the Bulldogs.
