Field Hockey Earns 10th Shutout of the Season in 4-0 Win Over Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (12-2, 7-2 GNAC) earned its 10th shutout the season, blanking Lasell University (8-6, 5-3 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday afternoon. The Sharks moved into sole second place amongst the entire NCAA in shutouts, trailing only Ohio Wesleyan by one.

The Sharks wasted very little time, jumping on the scored less than four minutes into the contest. Sophomore forward Sydney Gonyea registered her fifth game-winning goal of the season, finding the back of the cage at 3:28 to give Simmons the 1-0 lead.

Five minutes before the end of the first quarter of play, the Sharks increased their lead to two goals. Gonyea feed the ball to fellow class, sophomore forward Anna Tedeschi, who tipped in her 14th goal of the 2022 campaign.

Momentum remained on the Sharks side throughout the entire second period. The Sharks pressured the Laser defense intensely with a 7-1 advantage on penalty corners in the period, but they were unable to put one through, ending the half up in front, 2-0.

When the teams returned to the field at the beginning of the third quarter, graduate senior Riley Lambert scored her 12th goal of the season to put the Sharks up, 3-0. Three minutes Lambert added an assist to her stat line connected with Gonyea for the New Hampshire's second goal of the game and increase the Shark lead to four.

Making her second start of the week, Simmons senior goalkeeper Sarah Arenberg earned her sixth win of the season as she rejected three shot attempts by the Lasers. 

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore forward Sydney Gonyea scored her fifth game-winning goal of the season, registering a pair of goals increase her season total to 20 – one away from the program's single-season record (Julia Saltamartini, 2017 – 21).
  • Sophomore forward Anna Tedeschi's late first quarter goal made it six straight games the Hanover, Massachusetts native scored in.  
  • Senior goalkeeper Sarah Arenberg earned her second victory of the week and improved to 6-0 on the season overall.

GAME NOTES:

  • Simmons moved alone into second place amongst all of the NCAA in shutouts with their conference leading 10th shutout..
