Field Hockey Blanks Elms, 8-0, to Cap Off Month of September at 8-1

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (8-1, 3-1 GNAC) returned to the win column following an 8-0 win over Elms College (0-8, 0-3 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, Wednesday evening.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Shark offense had field day in the second. Junior Aria Badra ignited the Sharks five goals in the period, scoring in the opening two minutes. Three minutes later, Badra connected with graduate senior Riley Lambert for her seventh goal of the season.

It remained a two-goal game until the waning minutes of the half. Sophomore Sydney Gonyea recorded back-to-back goals – one on a breakaway and the second on a crisp pass from fellow classmate Hannah Groves to give the Sharks the 4-0 advantage. Just before the end of the half, Lambert slid the ball into sophomore Anna Tedeschi stick, who tipped it into the goal to put Simmons up five heading into the break.

Returning to the field at the start of the second half with the same offensive intensity, scoring off a penalty corner eight minutes into the third quarter. First-year Zoe Schmaling knocked in her third goal of the season off passes from seniors Maddie Beckwith and Haley Dover.  Beckwith recorded her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute, before Lambert registered her second assist of the game, finding Groves in the final three minutes to put the nail in the coffin.

Senior goalkeeper Emma Sheehan played 30 minutes in goal to earn her fifth win of the season as she recorded a save in the win. 

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHT

  • Seven different players scored, including senior Maddie Beckwith, Aria Badra and Hannah Groves, who all recorded a goal and an assist in the win.
  • Graduate senior Riley Lambert led the way with four points, registering a goal and a pair of assists.
  • Sophomore Anna Tedeschi concluded the first half with her sixth goal of the season.
  • First-year Zoe Schmaling recorded her third goal of her collegiate career, scoring the first goal of the second half.
  • Sophomore Sydney Gonyea tied Lambert with four points, registering two goals.

GAME NOTES

  • Simmons improves to the 11-2 all-time against Elms.
  • The Sharks concluded the month with their best month of September in program history.
