BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (7-0) rolled to its seventh straight win after blanking Salve Regina University (3-3), 2-0, on Wednesday evening. It is the Sharks fifth straight shutout as they are second amongst all of NCAA Division III in the category.

The Sharks rode into the midweek, non-conference bout with the Seahawks on the heels of four consecutive shutouts and an unblemished record. Two minutes into the contest, they looked to keep that mark intact. Coming up the near side, sophomore Hannah Groves found graduate senior Riley Lambert in front of the goal to give Simmons the 1-0 lead.

However, the Seahawks were not backing down. Midway through the first quarter, they looked poised to tie up the score with back-to-back shots, but senior goalkeeper Emma Sheehan came up big swatting the ball away.  Sheehan and the Sharks defense kept the Seahawks off the board, registering eight saves through the entire first half.

It remained a tight 1-0 contest as we made our way through the third quarter. Halfway through the period, Simmons had its best opportunity to add to its lead off a penalty corner, but Groves' shot went wide. Not long after, they were awarded another penalty corner, but this time Lambert's shot was stopped by the Seahawks.

With time ticking off the clock, the Sharks clung onto to their one goal lead before Lambert scored her second goal of the game in the final seconds.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Graduate senior Riley Lambert scored the game-winner in the second minute of the contest, then scored her second of the game – and sixth of the season – in the waning seconds of the contest.
  • Senior goalkeeper Emma Sheehan improved to 3-0 on the season, recording five saves.
  • Junior Lilah Gendreau helped anchor the Sharks defensively to secure their fifth straight shutout.
