Field Hockey Drops Overtime Thriller To Wheaton, 3-2

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey was handed its first loss of the season, falling to Wheaton College in overtime, 3-2, in a mid-week non-conference contest, Wednesday evening.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Wheaton's Ellie Williams broke up the stalemate in the 23rd minute to give the Lyons' the 1-0 advantage. But the Sharks answered when they came out of the break, junior Maddie Beckwith connected with first-year Anna Tedeschi to score the equalizer in the 43rd minute.

The tie was short-lived, as Lindsay Janeczek put the Lyons back ahead early in the second final period of regulation. However, one minute later, first-year Hannah Groves found the back of the cage to tie the game at two and force overtime.

One minute into the overtime period, the Lyons' Sophie Shekarchi was able to sneak the ball by sophomore goalkeeper Emma Sheehan to give Wheaton its fourth win of the season.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • First-year Anna Tedeschi 43rd minute goal made it her third consecutive game with a goal as she currently has three goals on the season.
  • Fellow classmate Hannah Groves registered his second goal of the season, scoring the equalizer in the 49th minute to tie up the contest a 2-2 and head to overtime.
  • Simmons outshot the Wheaton 14-8 in the game.
