Field Hockey Falls to Mount Holyoke, 3-0

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Simmons University field hockey team was defeated by visiting Mount Holyoke College, 3-0, this afternoon on Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 5-8 on the season, while the Lyons improve to 5-6.

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Simmons University field hockey team was defeated by visiting Mount Holyoke College, 3-0, this afternoon on Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 5-8 on the season, while the Lyons improve to 5-6.

Three different players scored in three different quarters for Mount Holyoke , which held a 13-8 shot advantage, while owning a 12-8 margin on penalty corners. 

The Lyons got on the board in the opening quarter on a penalty corner situation. Sophomore midfielder Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.) lifted an aerial shot from the top of the circle that was initially stopped, but junior back Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif.) was there for the rebound and her fourth goal of the season with 6:51 to play in the quarter and a 1-0 lead. 

Simmons held its guest scoreless for the remainder of the half, but Mount Holyoke added to its lead early in the third quarter. Robb sent a cross from the right side on a breakaway to sophomore forward Kylie Brooks (Oceanside, Calif.), who found the back of the cage for her third tally of the year just 83 seconds into the third quarter for a 2-0 margin. 

The Lyons added an insurance marker with just 1:17 remaining in the contest to make it 3-0. Sophomore midfielder Abby Baldwin (Florence, Mass.) sent a shot from just outside of the circle to sophomore forward Kass Lawrence (Holyoke, Mass.), who converted for her team-high eighth goal of the season. 

The Sharks looked to get on the board midway through the fourth quarter with back-to-back penalty corners, but shots from junior midfielder Maggie Fuzak (Buffalo, N.Y.) and senior forward Hannah Scott (Claremont, N.H.) were both turned away. Junior forward Liz Poteat (Westfield, Mass.) finished with a team-high three shots to lead the home team. 

Senior keeper Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) finished with seven saves to earn her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career for Mount Holyoke, while junior goalie Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) made eight stops for Simmons. 

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, October 12 when they host Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Johnson & Wales University on Daly Field at 11:00 a.m., while the Lyons host Endicott College on October 10 at 7:00 p.m.
