NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Junior goalkeeper Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) made a career-high 17 saves, but the Simmons University field hockey team succumbed to host Smith College, 1-0, this evening on the Smith Turf Field in Northampton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 5-6 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 3-6.

Smith controlled play for most of the match, owning a 33-2 shot advantage, including 12-1 in the fourth quarter when the deciding marker was recorded. The Pioneers also held a 10-1 margin on penalty corners.

McNamara was brilliant for Simmons, turning away the first 16 shots on frame that she faced. Smith was finally able to break through after more than 56 minutes of scoreless play when senior midfielder Sammie Pavlov's (Royersford, Pa.) shot was blocked, but sophomore forward Grace Moorehead (Cranston, R.I.) collected the rebound and fed junior midfielder Jenna Tampon (Oceanside, Calif.) for the winning score with 3:41 remaining in the game. 

The Sharks received shots from senior forward Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.), who unleashed a shot that was blocked early in the third quarter and sophomore back Brianna Desharnais (Freedom, N.H.), who's attempt went wide early in the fourth period of play.

Sophomore goalie Channy Cornell (Arlington, Texas) was untested during the match for the Pioneers and registered her sixth career shutout.

Simmons returns to action on Saturday, October 5 when it hosts Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Saint Joseph's College (Maine) at 11:00 a.m. on Daly Field, while Smith hosts Massachusetts Institute of Technology on the same day at 2:00 p.m.
