NASHUA, N.H. -- The Simmons University field hockey team was edged in overtime at host Rivier University, 1-0, this evening at Joanne Merrill Field in Nashua, N.H. The Sharks fall to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Raiders improve to 3-3 and 1-1.

The win marks the first-ever victory for Rivier over Simmons, snapping a 10-match losing streak to the Sharks. The Raiders overtime marker was their first goal against Simmons since October 3, 2012, spanning 513:29 minutes without a marker against the Sharks.

Despite Simmons owning a 14-7 shot advantage, including all seven attempts in the third period, and a 16-4 margin on penalty corners, the Sharks were unable to solve the Rivier keeper. The Raiders fired all three shots in the overtime period.

Rivier took advantage of the last of its two overtime penalty corners with two minutes to play in the extra period. Junior forward Nicole Mansfield (Acton, Mass.) inserted the ball off the endline, where sophomore midfielder Lia Yohanan (Andover, N.J.) received the ball at the top of the circle and sent a cross to first year midfielder Carissa Letendre (Whitinsville, Mass.), who found the back of the cage for her team-leading third goal of the season and a Raiders victory with 1:56 to play in the period.

Junior midfielder Maggie Fuzak (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the Simmons offense with six shots, including five on goal.

Sophomore goalie Katie Olsen (Saugus, Mass.) stopped a career-high 12 shots to earn her second career shutout for Rivier, while junior keeper Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) made two saves for the Sharks.

Simmons returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Thomas College (Maine) on Daly Field at 2:00 p.m., while the Raiders travel to Chicopee, Mass. on September 24 to take on Elms College at 7:00 p.m.
