BOSTON, Mass. – First year midfielder Emily Plummer (San Diego, Calif.) tallied the first two goals of her collegiate career to lead the Simmons University field hockey team over visiting Westfield State University, 3-1, this evening at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Owls fall to 1-2.

Simmons held possession for the majority of the match, holding a 10-4 advantage on penalty corners and a 10-7 shot margin.

Plummer scored both of her goals for the Sharks on the back end of a pair of penalty corners that she ignited with insert passes. Her first marker came just 8:44 into the first half. The rookie sent the insert pass to sophomore midfielder Maggie Fuzak (Buffalo, N.Y.), who crossed to junior forward Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.), who tipped to Plummer in the left slot for a shot into the far post for her first collegiate score and a 1-0 Simmons lead. Her second goal of the evening gave the Sharks a 3-1 lead after she inserted to Fuzak at the edge of the circle on the left side, who gave it back to her for a sweeping shot that rocketed past the Westfield State keeper and into the back of the cage with 26:17 left in the match.

Simmons took a 2-0 margin when Fuzak found sophomore Lily D'Anna (Woodstock, Vt.) with a short cross that resulted in the forward's first goal of the season with 9:53 left in the opening half.

The Owls made the most of the waning seconds of the first half when first year forward Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) was able to settle the ball and find classmate Allie Giguere (Lynn, Mass.) in the right slot for her second marker of the season, as time expired, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Sophomore goalie Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) stopped four shots to earn the victory for the Sharks, while sophomore keeper Katie Vamosi (Easton, Mass.) turned away four of six shots in the first half for Westfield State, before yielding to first year goalie Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass.), who stopped one of two shots in the second stanza.

Simmons returns to action on Wednesday, September 12 when it travels to New Haven, Conn. to take on Albertus Magnus College at 4:00 p.m., while the Owls head to Framingham, Mass. to play Framingham State University on September 8 at 2:00 p.m.
