Pioneers Trip Up Sharks, 3-1

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. ? Simmons Field Hockey fell to the Smith College Pioneer, 3-1 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Simmons Field Hockey fell to the Smith College Pioneer, 3-1 Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. Elsie Odhiambo netted the game winning goal just before halftime to improve Smith to 8-0, while Simmons falls to 6-5 on the season.  

 

Rebecca Meagher opened the scoring off a pass from Allie Stein following a corner less than 10 minutes into the game.  The Sharks tied the score in the 20th minute. After a Simmons penalty corner, Amy Cronin (Georgetown, Mass.) was on hand to poke home her fifth goal of the year past Smith 'keeper Maddi Wyda off an assist from Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.)

 

The Pioneers, who outshot Simmons 17-4, got back in front for good with 5:32 left in the first half.  Odhiambo, beat Simmons goalie Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) for her fourth of the year and the eventual game winner.

 

The Sharks came out firing after halftime, as Martensson tested Wyda with a shot from distance, but Smith held firm, and salted away the win with Stein's goal in the 56th minute.  With her back to the cage, Stein spun and beat Renna Smith for a 3-1 lead.

 

Smith will return to conference play by hosting No. 16 Wellesley College on Saturday at noon.  Simmons will travel to Maine-Farmington on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
