Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Amy Cronin (Georgetown, MA) finished off a penalty corner 1:53 into overtime to push visiting Simmons past WPI, 2-1, in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Alumni Field on a sun-soaked Saturday morning. With the win, the Sharks moved to 2-1 on the year while the Engineers evened out at 1-1.

In the short overtime period, Simmons was awarded a pair of penalty corners and capitalized on the only shot of the frame as Cronin and freshman Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, ME) teamed up to lift the guests to the 2-1 triumph.

Gagnon also had a stick in the other Sharks tally when she fed junior Kelly Williamson (Natick, MA) for the 1-0 lead at 12:59. As a team, Simmons outshot WPI 7-2 and took 11 of the 14 penalty corners in the opening stanza.

The Engineers tied the game at 58:41 when sophomore Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) knocked home a rebound that caromed off the netminder for her first of the year. The Sharks held a slim 4-3 advantage in shots and claimed a 10-2 bulge in penalty corners in the second half.

For the game, Simmons led the way in shots (12-5) and an eye-popping 23-5 difference in penalty corners.

Freshman goalkeeper Brianna Rastello (Salem, NH) stopped a trio of shots to collect her first collegiate win in her first appearance for the Sharks.

Senior Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) did not register a save in the opening half while sophomore Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) stopped three shots in relief.

Both teams return to action at 7pm on Tuesday as WPI hosts Fitchburg State and Simmons entertains Regis.
