BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons field hockey came from behind to tie the score at 42:24 but were unable to hold on, as the Smith College Pioneers scored with nine minutes to play to edge the Sharks 4-3 Wednesday evening.

Smith (4-4, 0-2 NEWMAC) took a 1-0 lead at 17:21 when Jenny Estes beat Sharks goalkeeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) down low. Just over a minute later, twin sister Kristen Estes found the back of the Sharks net to double the score. Sharks sophomore Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) tipped in a shot from Amy Cronin (Georgetown, Mass.) to cut the Pioneers lead to one at 25:12 but Smith scored again with 20 seconds remaining in the half off tally by Grace Maliska.

Down 3-1, the Sharks dominated the opening minutes of the second half. Courtney St. Pierre (New Bedford, Mass.) controlled a long cross ball from Williamson in the circle and beat Smith goalkeeper Savannah Lawson for her first goal of the season to cut the Pioneers lead to one. The Sharks continued to control the transition play and Carolyn Baremore (East Lyme, Conn.) posted key saves to keep the Sharks in the hunt.

With less than 20 minutes remaining in the game, Williamson slipped a pass through Smith's defense to Gabrielle LaPerriere (Auburn, Maine) who tallied her first collegiate goal to tie the game a three. But Smith forward Alllie Stein deflected a shot past Baremore to lift the Pioneers to victory.

The Sharks (2-9, 2-2 NAC) return to action on Saturday, September 29th when they travel to New England College for a 1:00 p.m. start.
