BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons field hockey scored just 1:36 into the first half but the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers recovered quickly, scoring four goals in the remainder of the half to secure a North Atlantic Conference victory, 6-4, Saturday afternoon at the Winsor field.

Sharks sophomore Meghan Fay (Foxboro, Mass.) put the Sharks on the board first off a rebound from Amy Cronin's (Georgetown, Mass.) initial shot. The Beavers evened the score just three minutes later off a goal by Annie Agnew. University of Maine senior Lily Barry tallied twice for the Beavers, increasing the lead and Kashley Weymouth added a fourth, beating Sharks goalkeeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) on the left side.

With less than a minute to play in the first, junior Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) collected the ball in the midfield and sent a long cross toward the Beavers goal. Sophomore Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) dove in the circle and deflected the shot into the net behind Beavers keeper Curran Brierley to end the first half scoring, 4-2.

In the second half, the Sharks cut the Beavers lead to one off a goal by Fay just 42 seconds in but Barry found the back of the net again at 55:31. Martensson and Cronin played a give-and-go down the left side before Cronin beat Brierley just a minute later to again bring the Sharks within one. The Sharks defense, led by Michaela Sangillo (Gray, Maine) and Caroline Bishop (Natick, Mass.), denied the Beavers four penalty corner attempts before Kaitlyn Bullen added an insurance goal at 67:19.

The University of Maine at Farmington held an advantage in shots, 26-12, and penalty corners, 11-0. Brierley made two saves in the win while Smith posted 15 saves in the loss for the Sharks.

The Sharks return to the field tomorrow against NAC rival Thomas College at 1:00 p.m.
