Field Hockey 2012 Season Preview

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons field hockey is in the midst of preparation for the opening of their 2012 season. With a 2011 overall record of 9-11 and 4-5 in North Atlantic Conference play, Simmons will rely on its talented returners and several first years to build upon last years success.

REHOBOTH, Mass.- Wheaton College junior Jenna Rocha recorded the decisive goal in overtime, lifting the Lyons to a 4-3 victory over non-conference foe Simmons at Faxon Field Sunday afternoon. Wheaton is now 2-3 this fall, while the Sharks dropped their third one-goal decision to fall to 0-4.

"Last year was a great year for Simmons field hockey. The team really grew as a whole and began to play with confidence and competitiveness," said third year head coach Amanda Maxwell.

Anchoring the defense for the Sharks this season is senior Michaela Sangillo (Gray, Maine) who will provide consistent ball control and offer an outlet to junior goalkeeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine). In the midfield, the Sharks will look to junior Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) for fluid transitions and a strong stick on the attack. Returning on offense is junior Monica Doucette (Rockport, Maine) will be a leader in the circle with her speed and vision of the field.

The Sharks will add six newcomers to the roster this season, among them are freshman Amy Cronin (Georgetown, Mass.) who will bring speed to the front line and Alexia Malone Oliver (Bristol, R.I.) and Gabrielle LaPerriere (Aubrn, Maine) who will add depth to the midfield. Joining Smith in net is freshman Carolyn Baremore (East Lyme, Conn.) who will bring quick feet and aggressiveness in the goal.

Simmons was ranked sixth this week by the North Atlantic Conference pre-season polls and will look to improve their record from last season and advance deep into the conference tournament. "We gained tremendous experience on the field last season," said Maxwell. "Our goal is to play with confidence right from the start and build momentum throughout the season."

The Sharks open their 2012 season on Saturday, September 1st at Fitchburg State at 12:00 p.m.
