Sharks Fall to Wheaton In Overtime, 4-3

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons field hockey is in the midst of preparation for the opening of their 2012 season. With a 2011 overall record of 9-11 and 4-5 in North Atlantic Conference play, Simmons will rely on its talented returners and several first years to build upon last years success.

REHOBOTH, Mass.- Wheaton College junior Jenna Rocha recorded the decisive goal in overtime, lifting the Lyons to a 4-3 victory over non-conference foe Simmons at Faxon Field Sunday afternoon. Wheaton is now 2-3 this fall, while the Sharks dropped their third one-goal decision to fall to 0-4.

The Sharks were on the scoreboard first with a goal by Aslyn Dindorf (Harts Location, N.H.) from Monica Doucette (Rockport, Maine), who found Dindorf in the slot. Andrea Winn tied the game at one just 1:12 into the second half. Doucette again found an opening in the middle, and this time fed Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) for the go ahead score at 43:04. Emily Chick and Eliza Kennedy each scored for Lyons as the hosts regained the lead but Doucette responded with a goal 53 seconds later to send the game into overtime.

Rocha's winner took place 3:53 into the extra session, as the Smith was drawn out on sophomore Sara McNicholas' cross, leaving a wide-open cage for Rocha.

Simmons held a 10-9 edge in shots through the first 35 minutes, but the Lyons stymied the Shark attack the rest of the way, surrendering just four shots. Wheaton finished with a 21-14 advantage in shots and a 20-7 edge in penalty corners.

Blue and White sophomore goalie Madison Wolters earned her first win of the season, turning aside seven shots, while visitor junior Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) made 12 saves in defeat.

The Lyons take the week off from competition and will return to action on Saturday for their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) at 11:00 a.m. The Sharks travel to Regis on Tuesday for a non-conference match up at 4:30 p.m.
