Sharks Field Hockey Falls to Pioneers

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.?Simmons Field Hockey fell to the Smith Pioneers 4-0, snapping a four game losing skid for the Pioneers in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

STANDISH, Maine ? #2 Saint Joseph?s College (12-5, 8-1 NAC) defeated #7 Simmons (9-11, 4-5 NAC), 3-1, in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) field hockey tournament quarterfinal at Lakeside Field on Saturday afternoon.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Simmons Field Hockey fell to the Smith Pioneers 4-0, snapping a four game losing skid for the Pioneers in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

Smith's Allie Stein had a goal and an assist on her return to the lineup as the Pioneers up their record to 2-6, while the Sharks fell to 5-6.

The Pioneers saw goals from Grace Maliska, Phoebe Hopkins and Allie Stein, who got the scoring started at the 4:03 mark. Stein fired in a shot from the top of the circle, and Maliska was on hand to deflect it past Simmons' goalie Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine).

Stein recorded her seventh of the year with an unassisted tally with 18:52 on the board, and Hopkins scored her first goal of the season three minutes later when she cleaned up a scrum in front of the cage to beat R. Smith high. Smith took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Pioneers completed the scoring 48 seconds into the second half. Sophie Demuynck took a penalty stroke and beat R. Smith for her first collegiate goal and a 4-0 Pioneers lead. Smith held a slight edge in shots to the Sharks, 15-14, while the Sharks held the advantage in penalty corners, 11-10.

Savannah Lawson made nine saves for Smith, while Renna Smith made five for the Sharks. Simmons will travel to New England College on October 1st at 5 p.m. for a NAC conference game. Smith will host MIT on Saturday, October 1st at 1 p.m.
