Lyons Claw Past Sharks

BOSTON, Mass. ? The Mount Holyoke College Lyons defeated the Simmons Sharks 7-1 in field hockey action Wednesday night to win their third straight game. Senior forward Shara Robertson tailed twice and assisted on two more to pace the Lyons in the win.

BOSTON, Mass. – The Mount Holyoke College Lyons defeated the Simmons Sharks 7-1 in field hockey action Wednesday night to win their third straight game. Senior forward Shara Robertson tailed twice and assisted on two more to pace the Lyons in the win.

The Lyons outshot the Sharks in the first half 26-4 but Simmons goalkeeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) came up with some impressive saves to keep the game scoreless for the first twenty-five minutes of play.

Mount Holyoke junior Angelica Pascual found the back of the net off a pass from teammate Kristi Wiemokly at 24:04 to take the lead. A minute later, senior Jess Fajardo scored off a penalty corner to end the first half scoring.

The momentum in the second half turned early when the Lyons were awarded a penalty stroke at 36:33. Junior Stephanie Pascual buried the shot past Smith stick side to increase the lead to three. Less than a minute later, Robertson scored her first goal of the evening after beating two defenders in the circle.

The Lyons held a slight advantage in penalty corners in the second half, 9-7 but Kristen Kilburn and Robertson were able to equalize their shots to give the Lyons a 6-0 lead.

Sharks freshman Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Sharks off a rifling pass from fellow freshman Meghan Fay (Foxboro, Mass.) at 59:23.

Lyons goalkeeper Katie Gibson recorded seven shots in the win while Smith made 18 in shouldering the loss.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, October 15th at 1:00 p.m. when they host Husson in a NAC conference game. The Lyons travel to MIT on the same date for a 1:00 p.m. game
