Simmons Field Hockey defeated visiting WPI on Tuesday night, 2-1, after a scoreless first half pushed both teams to seal the deal in the second period. Junior Katelyn Tighe (Easton, Mass.) scored the game-winner for the Sharks in their last contest of the regular season.

The first goal of the game did not come until 41:09 when Simmons freshman TJ Cowin (Newry, Maine) was finally able to put one away against the Engineers in a scramble in front of the goal.

WPI answered back with a goal at 53:18 from Sasha Marokhovsky off the assist from Meagan Read. The teams would go back and forth until the within the last three minutes of the game when Cowin carried the ball down the field and took a shot across goal. Liz Dufresne, the goalkeeper for the Engineers, came out to play the shot and Monica Doucette (Rockport, Maine) was there to try to put it away. Doucette's attempt was blocked when a defender stopped the shot with her hand. This led to a penalty stroke for the Sharks, taken by Tighe. Tighe calmly stepped up and put it away to bring the Sharks to a 2-1 lead. Simmons was able to hold off the Engineers until the final whistle for the win.

WPI had 18 shots in the contest, and freshman goalkeeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) came up big for the Sharks with 11 saves. Overall the Engineers enjoyed an 18-13 edge in shots and a 16-8 advantage in penalty corners.

Coach Maxwell said the team "all played at 100% for 100% of the time," which is exactly the effort they will need to continue as they move into the post-season.

The Engineers (4-12, 0-9 NEWMAC) will return home for the final game of their season against Smith College on Saturday, October 30 at 2:00pm. Next up, Simmons (6-10, 2-5 NAC) will face off against Maine-Farmington in the NAC tournament first round on Saturday, October 30 at 11:00am in Maine.
