Field Hockey Victorious vs. Wheelock, 7-0

Simmons Field Hockey earned their first win of the season on Saturday against neighborhood rival Wheelock College, 7-0. Senior captain Emily Sypher (Orono, Maine) had two goals for the Sharks, and sophomore Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) recorded two assists in the win. With the victory, Simmons improves to 1-6 overall, while Wheelock falls to 0-5 on the season.

Senior captain Emily Sypher (Orono, Maine) had two goals for the Sharks, and sophomore Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) recorded two assists in the win. With the victory, Simmons improves to 1-6 overall, while Wheelock falls to 0-5 on the season.

The Sharks outshot the Wildcats 20-6 on the day, and with the help of senior captain Jen Szkolt (Bondsville, Mass.) back in the net, recorded the first win and shutout of the 2009 season with 7 saves on the day.

Simmons scored five goals in the first half. Sophomore Katelyn Tighe (Easton, Mass.) struck first for the Sharks at 32:49 off a Caitlin Sweeney (Saugus, Mass.) assist. At 29:10 in, Sweeney followed up with a goal off a Sutherland assist. Junior Kasa Masse (Portland, Maine) collected a pass from Tighe to put the Sharks up 3-0 at 24:22 minutes in. Sutherland scored the next one off a Masse assist at 18:12, and freshman Marianna Brown (Newton, N.H.) found the back of the goal unassisted with 12 minutes remaining in the first half to boost the score to 5-0.

Sypher was the offensive star of the second half, scoring the remaining two goals for Simmons—the first one came just one minute after the start of the half with the aid of a Brown assist. The next Sypher goal took the score to 7-0 for Simmons eight minutes later, off another assist from Sutherland.

Wheelock's junior keeper Meredith Race made 15 saves for the Wildcats, while freshman Chelsey Ballard tallied three shots on goal.

Simmons will return to action on Saturday, September 26 when they travel to Thomas at noon for their North Atlantic Conference opener.
