Field Hockey Defeats Elms, 4-0

Senior captain Katie Bonney (Auburn, Maine) scored the game-winning goal as the Simmons College field hockey team edged Western New England College, 2-1, in non-league action on Thursday evening at the Winsor School Field. With the win, the Sharks improve to 2-8 on the season while WNEC drops to 0-9.

Sophomore Christine Lowery (White River Jct., VT) got things going twenty minutes into the first half when she tapped a loose ball in front of the net past Elms goalkeeper Katelyn Wazgatt, to give Simmons a 1-0 lead. 

In the second half, junior Emily Sypher (Orono, ME) made a stick stop off a penalty corner from junior Maggie Weeks (Tuftonboro, NH) to set up freshman Kelly Garrity (Reading, MA).  With 3:23 remaining in regulation, Bonney gathered a pass from freshman Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, NH) to put Simmons up 3-0.  Less then two minutes later Bonney scored her second goal of the game when she directed a pass from Weeks into the back of the net. 

Junior goalkeeper Jen Szkolt (Bondsville, MA) made three saves on the evening to record her second shutout of the season. Wasgatt was credited with a game-high 19 saves.

"We had a solid stretch in the second half when we were communicating and in position," said Head Coach Kate Leonard. "Our three second-half goals came because of good teamwork and conscious placement. Overall, we really put pressure on the Elms defense, and when we worked together with communication we put the pieces together."

The Sharks travel to Newton, MA on Thursday, October 16 to face conference foe Lasell College at 4:00pm. Elms returns to action on Thursday, October 16 when they host Daniel Webster at 7:00 pm.
