BOSTON – Returning home to the Holmes Sports Center, Simmons volleyball (5-2) dropped its second loss off the season to MIT (9-0) in four sets, 3-1, Thursday evening.

Junior outside hitter Sydney Iannantuono posted a .333 attack percentage, tallying 10 kills on 24 attempts with just three miscues, while also registered 10 digs. It was the Connecticut native's fourth straight game with a double-double. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
The Engineers came out the gate strong, hitting .615 as a team, they took the first set 25-11. MIT's Alyssa Unell and Consecrata Rozario were perfect from the floor, registering four kills on four attempts and two kills on two attempts, respectively, to lead the Engineer offense.

Set 2
MIT kept their foot on the accelerator in the second set, despite Simmons' heighted response. Sophomore Claire Conners led the way with three kills, but it was not enough to power past the Engineers who were able to edge out the Sharks, 25-23.

Set 3
With their backs against the wall, the Sharks staved off the shutout with a 26-24 win in game three, posting their best hitting (.286) and sideout (56%) percentages of the match. Sophomore Jayla Parnell led the way, hitting .375 with three kills on eight attempts while Iannantuono was three for nine and Conners was three for eight.

Set 4
Returning to form, MIT closed out the match in the fourth set, besting Simmons, 25-15, despite a near perfect performance from Iannantuono. Iannantuono was four of six for a .667 attack percentage with two defensive digs in the set.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior outside hitter Sydney Iannantuono registered her fourth straight double-double, tallying a team-best .333 attack percentage with 10 kills on 24 attempts and two errors..
  • Sophomore Claire Conners followed up with .273 hitting percentage and eight kills,.
  • Senior Amanda Fortune was solid at the net, tallying eight kills to go along with two total blocks (1 solo, 1 assist) 

UP NEXT
 Simmons returns to the Holmes Sports Center hard court next Tuesday, Sept. 21, hosting Westfield State University at 7 p.m. The Sharks have already defeated the Owls once this year at the Trinity Tri Tournament, 3-1.
