Weeg, Fortune Lead Volleyball at Suffolk, 3-0

BOSTON, Mass. -- Junior outside hitter Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) put down 10 kills and sophomore middle blocker Amanda Fortune (Round Rock, Texas) hit .600 and recorded six kills to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-19) victory over host Suffolk University today in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at Larry E. and Michael S. Smith Court in Boston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 17-8 overall, including 10-1 in league play, while the Rams fall to 18-11 and 8-3.

Simmons hit .240 for the match, while holding Suffolk to a .086 mark. 

Weeg hit .200 for the match, while Fortune added an ace, four digs and a pair of blocks for the Sharks. Junior middle blocker Megan Purser (Miami, Fla.) hit .500 for the match to fuel a six-kill effort in addition to a dig and a pair of blocks, while junior setter Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nevada) directed the offense with 26 assists to go with four digs, an ace and a block. First year outside hitter Syndey Iannantuono (East Lyme, Conn.) picked up 16 digs in addition to three aces, two blocks and five kills.

Junior outside hitter Kayla Barbera (Wakefield, R.I.) led the Rams offense with a match-high 12 kills, while first year setter Harmony Johnson (Riverside, Calif.) registered 22 assists, seven digs, two aces and a pair of blocks. Junior libero Dakhensey Marcellus (Brockton, Mass.) picked up a match-best 20 digs. 

The Rams held a 7-6 edge early in the opening set, before the Sharks took a 9-8 lead and never trailed again in the frame. Simmons put together an 8-3 run, including two kills from Weeg, to take a 16-11 margin. The Sharks later extended their lead to 21-13, before winning the final two points of the set for a 25-16 set one win. 

Suffolk led again in the second frame, owning a 15-14 edge, but Simmons later took a 22-21 lead with the sixth change of advantage for the set. Weeg put down three kills for the final three points of the set to give the Sharks a 25-21 second set victory.

The Sharks never trailed in the third set, building a 12-5 lead midway through the frame. The teams traded points throughout the rest of the set, before Fortune scored the final point of the match with a kill to make it 25-19.

Simmons and the Rams both return to action later in the day when each plays GNAC foe Saint Joseph's College (Maine).
