Volleyball Serves for 19 Aces to Defeat Colby-Sawyer, 3-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Junior outside hitter Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) put down 13 kills to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 20-25, 25-14) victory over host Colby-Sawyer College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action this afternoon at the Hogan Sports Center in New London, N.H. The Sharks win their third in a row and seventh of their last eight to improve to 9-4 overall for their best start since going 11-2 to begin the 2011 campaign. Simmons is also a perfect 3-0 in league play, while the Chargers fall to 8-10 and 1-2.

Weeg also hit .310 for the match, while adding two block assists and four digs for Simmons. Sophomore middle blocker Krissy Lloyd (Tampa, Fla.) swung for 12 kills on a .222 hitting percentage and first year outside hitter Sydney Iannantuono (East Lyme, Conn.) spiked for eight kills and picked up three digs. Junior setter Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) registered 38 assists and three digs. The Sharks defenders were a force behind the service line with juniors Morgan Lauvray (Murrieta, Calif.) and Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) joining first year Gabriela Hernandez (San Francisco, Calif.) to each fire five aces apiece as part of a team season-high total of 19. Lauvray also led all players with 20 digs, while Hernandez picked up nine and Fusco had seven. 

Colby-Sawyer senior Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) led the team with 13 kills and added five blocks. She moved into fifth in career solo blocks with 94. Senior Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) moved up two spots to fifth on the all-time digs list with 22 today to give her 1268 for her career. Sophomore setter Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) contributed 23 assists and seven digs.

The Sharks return to action when they travel Providence, R.I. on Wednesday, October 2 to take on number five Johnson & Wales University at 6:00 p.m. in GNAC play, while the Chargers host New England College on October 1 at 7 p.m.
