Weeg Leads Volleyball to Tri-Match Sweep over Trinity (3-1) and Southern Maine (3-0)

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Junior outside hitter Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) put down a total of 29 kills to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team to a tri-match sweep over host Trinity College (Conn.), 3-1, and University of Southern Maine (3-0) this today at Oosting Gymnasium in Hartford, Conn. The Sharks extend their win streak to four straight, while the Bantams fall to 3-3 and the Huskies slip to 3-5.

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Junior outside hitter Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) put down a total of 29 kills to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team to a tri-match sweep over host Trinity College (Conn.), 3-1, and University of Southern Maine (3-0) this today at Oosting Gymnasium in Hartford, Conn. The Sharks extend their win streak to four straight, while the Bantams fall to 3-3 and the Huskies slip to 3-5.

Simmons split the first two sets with Trinity, winning the first frame, 25-22, before bowing, 25-20, in the second set. The Sharks dominated the third set, 25-13, before taking the fourth set, 25-22, for the match win in its first-ever match against the Bantams. 

Simmons hit .200 or better in all three winning sets vs. Trinity. Weeg finished with 14 kills on a .250 hitting mark to go with a pair of digs, while first year outside hitter Sydney Iannantuono (East Lyme, Conn.) spiked for 12 kills, picked up six digs and got up for a block assist. Sophomore middle hitter Amanda Fortune (Round Rock, Texas) contributed with eight kills, three digs and a block assist and hit .294 for the match. Junior setter Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) recorded 25 assists, six digs and an ace and junior libero Morgan Lauvray (Murrieta, Calif.) fired three aces and scooped up 15 digs.

Senior outside hitter Colette Scheffers (Flossmoor, Ill.) led all players with 16 kills and added 14 digs for a double-double, while sophomore outside hitter Herena Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) spiked for 10 kills. Junior setter Jessica Yang (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) recorded a double-double of 25 assists and 10 digs.

The Sharks cruised past Southern Maine, 27-25, 25-16, 25-20. 

Weeg put down 15 kills and hit .289 in addition to a pair of block assists and a dig vs. the Huskies. Fortune was extremely efficient with a blistering .562 hitting percentage, spiking for 10 kills and committing just one attack error. She also added an ace, a block assist and two digs. Gray-Williams set for a match-high 28 assists to go with eight digs and three aces, while Lauvray served up a career-high five aces and got down for 12 digs. Junior defensive specialist Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) also registered double-digit digs with 10 and rung up two aces.  

Sophomore outside hitter Molly Mawhinney (South Portland, Maine) led the Huskies with 11 kills and 10 digs and sophomore setter Sophie Lindsay (Pasadena, Calif.) set for 19 assists and added seven digs.

Simmons returns to action on Thursday, September 19 when it hosts Babson College at 7:00 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium, while Trinity heads to Williamstown, Mass. to take on Williams College on September 19 at 7:00 p.m. Southern Maine hosts Bates College on September 17 at 7:00 p.m.
