Fortune Leads Volleyball to Sweep of Anna Maria and Dean in Tri-Match

PAXTON, Mass. -- First year middle blocker Amanda Fortune (Round Rock, Texas) put down 24 kills and fired six aces to lead the Simmons University women's volleyball team to a tri-match sweep over host Anna Maria College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-13) and Dean College, 3-0 () today at the Fuller Activities Center in Paxton, Mass. The Sharks improve to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play with the win over AMC, while Anna Maria is 1-4 and 0-1 and Dean is 2-3.

Simmons hit .357 or better in every set vs. Anna Maria and served up 16 aces.

Fortune swung for 16 kills and committed just three attack miscues to fuel a .619 hitting percentage and added a pair of block assists for the Sharks. Sophomore setter Faith Gray-Williams (Las Vegas, Nev.) spiked for eight kills and added 15 assists, six digs and an aces, while sophomore libero Julia Fusco (Beverly, Mass.) came up with 10 digs and served for a pair of aces. Sophomore outside hitter Riley Roberge (Peoria, Ariz.) put down six kills on a .417 hitting clip in addition to five aces, five assists, a dig and a block.

Simmons absolutely dominated the middle set vs. Dean, registering an eye-popping .882 hitting percentage as a team, posting 16 kills in 17 attempts. The Sharks hit .425 for the match and fired 15 aces.

Gray-Williams recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 11 assists to go with four digs and a pair of blocks for the Sharks, while Fortune tallied eight kills on a .375 hitting mark and served up six aces. Junior setter Kenna McCarthy (Shelter Island, N.Y.) set for 17 digs and picked up six digs and first year outside hitter Reilly Coombs (Deland, Fla.) registered 10 points, including five kills and five aces to go with seven digs. Sophomore middle blocker Brittany Gotts (Topsfield, Mass.) was very efficient with five kills in seven swings for a .714 hitting percentage and added a dig and a block.

Simmons returns to the court on Wednesday, September 12 when it hosts Gordon College at 7:00 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium.
