Harberts Named GNAC Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week For Third Time

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College's Jarene Harberts (Naples, Fla.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of October 23-29, it was announced today by the league. Harberts earns the honor for a league-high third time after previously being named for the weeks of September 18-24 and October 2-8. 

In three matches and 10 sets, the first year averaged 4.00 kills, 2.20 digs and 0.70 aces per set to go with a formidable .250 hitting percentage. The rookie registered 10 or more kills in all three matches, while posting a double-double for the Sharks. She began the week by putting down 10 kills and added eight digs vs. number seven regionally-ranked Babson College in a 3-0 victory on October 25. The Seacrest Country Day School graduate finished the week with 30 kills in a GNAC tri-match on October 28. Harberts registered her sixth double-double of the season with 13 kills on a .250 mark to go with 10 digs, four aces and an assisted block in a 3-0 win over host University of Saint Joseph (Conn.). She capped the week with 17 kills on a robust .419 hitting mark in addition to picking up four digs and firing three aces in a 3-1 victory over Suffolk University. 

The rookie has enjoyed an outstanding season, ranking eighth among conference leaders and first among newcomers with 3.02 kills per set and stands second on the team with 2.05 digs per set. Harberts has played in all 28 matches and seen action in 92 of 96 sets. She has been excellent from behind the backline with 29 aces and has recorded 22 total blocks, including seven solos. Harberts registered a season-high 21 kills in just three sets vs. Albertus Magnus College on September 23 for the 17th-most in a three-set match in NCAA III this season and has swung for 10 or more kills 15 times, while picking up double-digit digs in eight outings. 

Simmons closed out the regular season with 10 straight wins for the longest such streak in recent memory at the school and currently owns a 19-9 mark to tie for the most wins in a season since 2012. The Sharks posted an 11-1 conference record and earned the second seed in the upcoming GNAC Championship Tournament for their highest showing in school history. Simmons hosts seventh-seeded Suffolk on Tuesday, October 31 at 7:00 p.m. in the GNAC Quarterfinals at Moore Gymnasium.
