Harberts Named GNAC Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week Again

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College?s Jarene Harberts (Naples, Fla.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of September 18-24, it was announced today by the league.

Simmons College?s Jarene Harberts (Naples, Fla.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of October 2-8, it was announced today by the league. The honor marks the second time this season that Harberts has earned the award, having also been named the top rookie for the week of September 18-24 as the only player in the GNAC to have been tabbed multiple times this season.

Harberts earns the honor for a league-high third time after previously being named for the weeks of September 18-24 and October 2-8. 

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College's Jarene Harberts (Naples, Fla.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of October 2-8, it was announced today by the league. The honor marks the second time this season that Harberts has earned the award, having also been named the top rookie for the week of September 18-24 as the only player in the GNAC to have been tabbed multiple times this season. 

The first year player enjoyed an outstanding all-around week for the Sharks, averaging 3.22 kills, 3.0 digs, 0.44 aces and 0.22 blocks per set over nine sets in three matches, while hitting .244 and handling 47 serves without committing an error. The hitter put down nine or more kills and eight or more digs in all three matches for Simmons. Harberts began the week with her team-leading fourth double-double of the season on 10 kills and 11 digs to go with an ace and a .200 hitting clip in a 3-0 victory over Saint Joseph's College (Maine) on October 4. The Seacrest Country Day School product closed out the week in a tri-match at host Norwich University on October 7. The rookie began the day with 10 kills, eight digs, a service ace and a block assist in addition to a .219 hitting percentage to help the Sharks to a 3-0 win over Rivier University. Harberts followed that performance with nine kills fueled by a .333 hitting clip and added eight digs, two aces and a block solo in a 3-0 triumph over Norwich. 

For the season, Harberts has played in 71 of the team's 73 sets over 21 matches and ranks 12th in the league and second among rookies with 2.76 kills per set, while standing as one of six players in the conference to average that many kills along with 1.87 digs and 0.28 blocks per set. She stands second on the team in kills and digs per set. The Florida native has put down double-digit kills on nine occasions, including a season-high of 21 on a .385 hitting mark vs. Albertus Magnus College on September 23. 

Simmons has won three straight matches and owns a 12-9 overall record, including 6-1 in league play. The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, October 11 when they host Lasell College at Moore Gymnasium for a 7:00 p.m. match.
