Harberts Named GNAC Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College?s Jarene Harberts (Naples, Fla.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of September 18-24, it was announced today by the league.

Simmons College?s Jarene Harberts (Naples, Fla.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of October 2-8, it was announced today by the league. The honor marks the second time this season that Harberts has earned the award, having also been named the top rookie for the week of September 18-24 as the only player in the GNAC to have been tabbed multiple times this season.

Harberts earns the honor for a league-high third time after previously being named for the weeks of September 18-24 and October 2-8. 

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College's Jarene Harberts (Naples, Fla.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of September 18-24, it was announced today by the league. 

The first year averaged 4.00 kills per set, while owning a .231 hitting percentage in 13 sets over matches. The outside hitter also picked up 2.62 digs per frame and added six aces and three block assists during the week. Harberts swung for 10 or more kills in three of four matches and posted double-digit dig totals in a pair of matches. A graduate of Seacrest Country Day School, the rookie began the week with 14 kills and 10 digs to register her third double-double of the year and added an ace and a block assist in four sets at Lesley University on September 19. Harberts came back the next night to swing for seven kills, get down for 12 digs and fire a pair of aces in three frames vs. Colby-Sawyer College. The hitter capped the week by averaging seven kills per set with a season-high of 21 in three sets, fueled by a .385 hitting mark to go with five digs and a block assist on September 23. She completed the tri-match by putting down 10 kills, while committing just one attack error to record a season-best .409 hitting clip. Harberts also added seven digs and a personal-high three aces in addition to an assisted block vs. Regis (Mass.). 

For the season, Harberts ranks eighth among GNAC leaders with 2.92 kills per set, while leading all league rookies in kills per set. She is one of just three players in the conference to average 2.92 kills, 1.90 digs and 0.35 blocks per set. She ranks second for the Sharks in kills and digs per set and also owns a .137 hitting percentage. Harberts has recorded seven double-digit kill outings and has picked up 10 or more digs on four occasions including a season-high of 18 to go with 20 kills on September 2 vs. Pennsylvania State University-Berks in the Colonial Classic. 

Simmons has won three straight matches and currently owns an 8-6 record for the season. The Sharks  return to action on Tuesday, September 26 when they host Johnson & Wales University at 7:00 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium.
