Volleyball Drops Two in Tri-Match with Anna Maria and WPI

BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's volleyball team was defeated by visiting Anna Maria College, 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23) and Worcester Polytechnic Institute of Technology, 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-16). WPI downed Anna Maria, 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) this afternoon at Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. The Sharks are now 9-14 on the season, including 6-4 in league play, while the AMCATS are 15-13 and 5-4. The Engineers won their third straight match and nine of its last 10 to improve to 19-6.

Junior outside hitter Cailin Fredrickson (Columbia, Md.) averaged 3.71 kills and 3.3 digs per set on the day for Simmons, while junior libero Kat Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.) averaged 4.43 digs per frame. Junior setter Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) set for 10.0 assists per set and picked up 2.86 digs per frame.

Sophomore outside hitter Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, Mass.) averaged 3.33 kills per set and junior libero Cassandra Tomerlin (La Quinta, Calif.) fired 10 aces and averaged five digs to lead WPI. 

Daigle hit a robust .346 with swung for 11 kills to go with two block assists and a dig to lead the Engineers vs. Anna Maria. Sophomore right side hitter Kat Hurlock (Burlington, Conn.) put down eight kills in addition to four total blocks and a pair of digs, while Tomerlin anchored the defense with 17 digs to go with four aces. Senior middle hitter Jessica Goulet (Lawrence, Mass.) led the AMCATS with seven kills and a .211 hitting mark. First years Carolina Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) (17) and Amari King (Lawrence, Mass.) (13) combined for 30 digs to lead the Anna Maria defensive effort. 

Daigle smashed nine kills and committed just one error as part of a .296 hitting mark vs. Simmons, while sophomore middle hitter Brooke Klepper (Miami Beach, Fla.) hit .357 with six kills and added five block assists. Tomerlin peppered the floor with six aces and picked up 13 digs. First year setter Azita Bakhtyari (Andover, Mass.) chipped in with four kills, nine assists, eight digs, two aces and five block assists. The Sharks were led by Fredrickson with seven kills in addition to 12 digs and two total blocks. Guillotte got down for a match-high 20 digs, fired an ace and put down a kill for Simmons. 

The Sharks had three players register at least 12 kills vs. Anna Maria. Fredrickson swung for a match-best 18 kills and added 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. She also served up a pair of aces. Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Woodward (Deerfield, Mass.) put away 15 kills and picked up eight digs, while senior right side hitter Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.)recorded 12 kills and a .417 hitting mark to go with six digs and a solo block. Duke directed the offense with 49 assists and posted 14 digs. King nearly registered a double-double for Anna Maria with nine kills and 13 digs and added four assisted blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Foti (Bedford, N.H.) also swung for nine kills and picked up 11 digs to go with three aces. Sophomore middle hitter Talliah Bursie (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) also contributed with eight kills without an error for a .471 hitting percentage and also got up for six assisted blocks. 

Simmons will be in action again on Thursday, October 29 when it heads up the street to take on Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m. WPI travels across the city to play Clark University on October 27 at 7:00 p.m., while Anna Maria hosts Worcester State University on the same night at 7:00 p.m.
