BROOKLINE, Mass. - Junior outside hitter Cailin Fredrickson (Columbia, Md.) just missed posting a double-double with 13 kills and nine digs to lead the Simmons College volleyball team in a 3-1 (25-9, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19) loss to host Newbury College this evening in a match played at Hellenic College in Brookline, Mass. The Sharks fall to 4-6 on the season, while the Nighthawks improve to 4-6.

Newbury, which fell to Simmons, 3-2, just nine days ago, set the tone early, hitting a torrid .458 clip, while commiting just one attack error in the first set and won the frame, 25-9. The Nighthawks took a 2-0 lead after a 25-18 second set win, but the Sharks fought back with a 25-20 effort in the third frame. Newbury put the match away with a 25-19 win, despite an early fourth set lead by Simmons.

Fredrickson added three service aces to her night for a total of 16 points for the Sharks, while sophomore outside hitter Sarah Woodward (Deerfield, Mass.) swung for 11 kills, picked up four digs and fired three aces. Junior libero Kat Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.) led all players with 19 digs, while first year setter Jessica Phinney (Malden, Mass.) responded in her first collegiate start with 26 assists, three digs and an ace for Simmons.

Junior middle hitter Courtney Banks (Corona, Calif.) was a force on both sides of the net for the Nighthawks, leading all offensive players with 17 kills, while making just two attack errors for a .455 hitting mark and added five digs and four block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Lina Miranda (Brockton, Mass.) spiked for 14 kills on a formidable .294 hitting clip in addition to serving up a pair of aces, picking up nine digs and recording a total of five blocks to provide a spark on the defensive side as well. Sophomore setter Marlen Reynoso (Springdale, Ark.) directed the offense with 38 assists to go with six digs and two assisted blocks and sophomore defensive specialist Julia Leggett (Longview, Wash.) scooped up a team-high 15 digs and also served for two aces.

The Sharks will be in action again when they host Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Moore Gymnasium on Thursday, September 24 at 6:00 p.m., while Newbury heads to Newton, Mass. tomorrow to take on Mount Ida College at 6:00 p.m.
