Balanced Effort Leads Volleyball to 3-1 Victory over Eastern Connecticut

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Simmons College volleyball team fired 14 aces and saw four players register double-digit digs to fuel a 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20) victory over Eastern Connecticut State University at the 2015 CGA Bear Invitational hosted by United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. The Sharks improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 0-2.

The Sharks improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Warriors fall to 0-2.

Five points separated the first two sets of play, before Simmons took control in the final two frames.

Junior outside hitter Cailin Fredrickson (Columbia, Md.) sparked the Sharks' offense with a match-high 14 kills and added 10 digs for her second career double-double in addition to a block assist and a career-high three aces. Junior setter Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) also posted a double-double with a match-best 28 assists and 13 digs to go with a pair of aces.

Junior libero Kat Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.) matched her career-high with 19 digs and added a kill. Senior right side hitter Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) and sophomore defensive specialist Susan Wilson (Winchester, Mass.) led Simmons from the service line with career-bests from both players. Alberghini led the Sharks with seven aces in addition to five kills and Wilson fired five aces and picked up a dig. Junior middle hitter Abby Hart (Westfield, Mass.) chipped in with seven kills and three blocks, including a solo, while junior defensive specialist Alex Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) got down for 11 digs.

Junior outside hitter Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury, Conn.) led the Eastern Connecticut State attack with 11 kills and added 17 digs for a double-double. Senior libero Allie Luppi (Tewksbury, Mass.) was big on both sides of the net, serving up a match-best nine aces, while scooping up 20 digs. Junior setter Fabiana Della-Monica (Newark, Del.) set for 13 assists, picked up seven digs and scored with an ace.

Simmons continues tournament play tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. when it takes on Newbury College, while the Warriors also play Newbury at 1:00 p.m.
