Volleyball Downed by No. 1 Calvin, 3-0

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Simmons College volleyball team was beaten by number one Calvin College this morning, 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-20), on the second day of competition at the Clarkson University Classic Volleyball Tournament in Potsdam, N.Y. at Alumni Gymnasium. The Sharks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Knights, who are ranked by the American Volleyball Coaches Association improve to a perfect 3-0.

The Sharks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Knights, who are ranked by the American Volleyball Coaches Association improve to a perfect 3-0.

Calvin made just a combined total of five hitting errors in the first two sets, taking them 25-14 and 25-13, respectively, before Simmons regrouped for a gutty third set that saw the Sharks post a .207 hitting mark in a 25-20 third-set loss to the defending national champions.

Junior outside hitter Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, Ill.) led the Knights with 14 kills to go with a .429 hitting percentage, seven digs and a block. Freshman right side Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ont.) contributed with eight kills in just 12 attempts and added a pair of block assists, while freshman setter Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill.) registered 28 assists, 11 digs, two block assists, three kills and an ace.

First year outside hitter Sarah Woodward (Deerfield, Mass.) led Simmons with nine points on five kills, three aces and a solo block, while getting down for seven digs. Classmate Emmee Ashby (Payson, Ariz.) also swung for five kills in addition to a pair of blocks. Sophomore setter Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) established the pace with 14 assists and also added five digs, while sophomore libero Alex Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) came up with a match-best 13 digs to lead the Sharks defensive effort.

Simmons won have much time to rest as they return to action at 1:00 p.m. to face State University of New York at New Paltz on the Alumni Gym floor, while Calvin takes on Roger Williams University at 11:00 a.m.
