Volleyball Baffles Colby in 3-2 Victory

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Volleyball fell to the visiting Rivier University Raiders, 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-18) Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the Holmes Sports Center.  

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Simmons Volleyball was down 2-1 and came back to defeat the Colby College Mules, 3-2 for the first time in program history Saturday afternoon at Tufts University.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons first year Alexandria Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) was named to the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Volleyball Third Team announced Monday by the conference.

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Simmons Volleyball was down 2-1 and came back to defeat the Colby College Mules, 3-2 for the first time in program history Saturday afternoon at Tufts University.

 

After dropping the first game 25-19, Simmons took a 7-0 lead to start game two from strong play by Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) and Abby Hart (Westfield, Mass.). Colby closed the gap to two before taking the lead, 22-18. Andalyn Duke (Litchfield Park, Ariz.) and Megan Chamberlin (Milford, Mass.) threw down kills and an error by Colby brought the Sharks to within one. An ace by Duke gave the Sharks the lead but Sarah Arvidson and Ellie Linden added kills to tie the game at 25. After a Sharks service error, Alberghini came up huge with a kill to knot the game at 26. Another Colby error put the Sharks up one before Hart buried a shot past the Mules defense for a 28-26 victory.

 

The Mules rebounded in game three, defeating the Sharks 25-13 for a 2-1 lead but Simmons erased a seven-point deficit in game four to force a game five, 26-24. Simmons jumped out to a 11-5 lead off kills by Kat Guillotte (New Bedford, Mass.), Hart and Chamberlin and never looked back as the Sharks won game five, 15-8.

 

With the win, Simmons moves to 10-23 on the season while Colby falls to 10-14. The Sharks face the Saint Joseph's College (Me.) Monks in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference quarterfinals on Nov. 5.
